Long bio

340 words

Ragi Yaser Burhum is a Peruvian serial entrepreneur and technologist with more than twenty years in the tech industry, now based in Miami.

He is CTO of Canaria, where he builds AI-powered compliance and anti-money-laundering tools for crypto companies such as Ripple, Uniswap, FalconX, Wormhole Foundation, Veda and Standard Custody, and the founder of SeedPhrase Fund, an operator-led vehicle that invests in crypto-native companies, networks and digital assets.

He has founded several venture-backed startups. AmigoCloud, a geospatial platform for field data, went through the Code for America accelerator and Stanford StartX. ModeWalk, a couture e-commerce company he co-founded as CTO, also went through Stanford StartX, was featured in Vogue and The New York Times, and was acquired by Moda Operandi. His career spans GIS technology at Esri, Microsoft and NVIDIA, video games (Microsoft Flight Simulator at Microsoft Game Studios) and e-commerce. Software he wrote at Esri in his twenties is still used by most countries for census data collection, nautical charts and national geographic information systems, and by U.S. agencies including the Department of Defense, NASA, NGA and the U.S. Forest Service. He has been an open source contributor, especially in the geospatial ecosystem, for as long as he has written software.

During the COVID-19 pandemic he wrote "El Martillazo y el Huayno", an article that went viral overnight as the first document explaining the pandemic's impact in Peru, and co-founded OpenCovid-Perú, a volunteer open-data initiative that became the reference for Peruvian press coverage of the pandemic. He was appointed to the government working group that updated Peru's official death toll with a methodology designed for countries with limited testing, later presented to the World Health Organization. The work earned a formal thank-you from the Executive and an invitation to present to Congress.

He gave the TEDxTukuy talk "Qué puede hacer un país que controla su geografía", co-hosts iA al Día, a weekly Spanish-language podcast on artificial intelligence, wrote a biweekly column for La República, and is a frequent guest on Peruvian television and radio on AI, crypto and cybersecurity.
